Alison Kiawenniserathe Benedict, MSW

She:kon,
My English name is Alison Benedict. My Mohawk name is Kiawenniserathe. It is a Wolf Clan name meaning Bright Day. I am from Akwesasne, which straddles the US/Canada border in New York, Ontario and Quebec. Over the past 12 years, my work has focused on community wellness and healing. It was through my own healing journey that it became clear that community healing was an integral part of the whole healing process. Our collective community and historical traumas resonated within every individual. Without healing on the individual, family and community levels, our Nation would be weak. All of the pain caused from infighting, jealousy and various issues would continue to rip our community apart. The Great Law tells us that we need to live peacefully with all beings in Creation, use our power in a good way and that in order to have justice, we must have good minds. A good mind is not troubled, angry, jealous or filled with worry. It is at peace, thankful, generous and smart, both in knowledge and in ability. I have been blessed with many opportunities to learn and to share what I have learned. Receiving my Masters Degree at the University of Michigan was an opportunity I am thankful for everyday. The knowledge and skills I gained have been shared with many Native and non-Native communities as a teacher and a healer. It was while I was at the U of M that I began thinking about community wellness and healing in depth, as I learned about trauma. My dream is that all people will have great peace (skennakowa) in their hearts and in their minds. Then, come together as one to resolve all the complex issues facing our Mother Earth. Each of us, through our individual or collective healing, brings this dream closer to reality. Niawen:kowa.
In Peace,
Alison
